re: [Story] To Help or Not to Help (Folami)

It was easy to spend hours wandering the streets of Silvermoon City drifting in and out of the many shops to sample the various wares, and that was normally how Folami spent her visits there, but not this time. After her requisite trip to Orgrimmar, her mind had refused to cease its constant replay of the conversation she’d happened to overhear at the inn. Reason told her she should let it go, that involving herself in matters of potentially dangerous magical artifacts without being first being asked was begging for trouble, not to mention possible decapitation if that one death knight’s threats were to be believed. However, curiosity was often stronger than reason, and this was especially true wherever Folami was concerned. The moment the opportunity presented itself, she headed straight for Silvermoon to see what she might be able to learn about this mysterious mirror.

The elder orc had said the mirror was possibly elven in origin and that he sensed dark magic. The Sanctum warlocks would be well versed in all manners of blood elf history and dark magic. At least one of them should be eager to discuss the various applications of said magic at length, especially with a promising young talent like Folami. It worked in her favor that The Sanctum was in all likelihood ignorant of the mirror’s existence, but she needed to keep her questions vague enough not to raise suspicion lest someone think she wanted such a thing for her own use. In spite of the Sunwell’s restoration, warlocks wielded dangerous magics and worked closely with demons. Addiction was still a threat, not to mention insanity, two factors which, when coupled with large amounts power, meant rogue warlocks were terrifyingly destructive forces. Folami shuddered to imagine what might happen should any Sanctum member begin to believe she was succumbing to darkness.

And then there was the risk of being spotted by the group she had not-so-inadvertently spied on in Orgrimmar. The death knight wouldn’t care that Folami was rather attached to her head if the mirror’s owners wanted it kept secret, and that was another issue. If she did succeed in finding out anything about the mirror, how should she approach the group? That is, if she approached them at all.

Then why trouble yourself with these matters? She’d asked herself the question many times over since she first made the decision to travel to Silvermoon. The answer was always the same: I want to help.

It was a simple statement, maybe even a little naïve, but it was the truth. For Folami, all the magical talent in the world meant nothing if she couldn’t use it to do something other than cause suffering for others or herself. The orc and the others said the mirror had changed at least two who had come into contact with it. With her knack for magic and the resources available to her in the Sanctum, she might be able at the very least to suggest ways to slow the mirror’s damaging effects until more information could be uncovered.

After a lifetime spent believing her powers would one day transform her into a monster, it was wonderful to imagine using her talents to heal rather than harm. Now she just had to hope her intentions would be thought of as helpful instead of damaging.
