re: Spellthread

The rain was coming down steadily, making a rhythmic patter on the rooftop. Liquidlight turned her gaze from the window, pulling away from the dismal view. She spied a streak of red at the top of her satchel and suddenly remembered the repair she had been asked to make. Excited to have a distraction, she pulled the cape from her bag and threaded a needle in one swift motion. She muttered a few words over the thread and suddenly it began to glow. Just as quickly, the amber light faded.

“Slow down. Concentrate,” she told herself aloud. With her eyelids lowered, she placed two fingers on the thread and took a deep breath in. As she exhaled, a melody of words slowly danced onto the delicate twine, and it began to radiate a golden hue.

Her face relaxed as her hands began the even motion of stitching. Up, over, through; up, over through; up, over, through. Gazing intently at the cloak, she could not help but think of it's owner. The garment, like it's owner, battle-hardened but brimming with vitality. Until now, that is . . .

A flash of memory. A pallid face. Serene on the surface, but wrenched with turmoil beneath. A body, battle-hard and bearing the scars of war. A soul, drifting and distant. What would it take to reach that soul, to heal those wounds? What power might be called upon to mend these injuries? Throughout Azeroth, there had been so much anguish, so much suffering. Healing those bodies had taken a toll, but far greater was the toll from those who could not be saved. Now here was a companion, a fellow defender of the people, a friend – Ouch!

Liquidlight pulled her hand up suddenly to see a drop of blood pooling on her finger. She looked down at her tailoring to see a tangled mess of fabric and thread. She tossed the mess aside and stood up, pacing angrily to the window. The rain had subsided, leaving a heavy mist in the air. She leaned on the sill and looked out. The haze was tinged with green, and outlines of strong trees could be made out. The trunks reminded her of her days at Sunsail Anchorage, when tall masts of ships could be made out through the early morning fog. On the docks in the moments before sunrise she would sit, reciting spells over and over until the sun burned off the morning mist. Until they were in her, like walking, like breathing, like blood pumping through her.

A throbbing fingertip drenched in scarlet brought her back to the present. A few hastily whispered words eased the pain and stopped the bleeding. Seeing the stream of red that now fell to the hem of her robe, she recalled once again the task at hand.

“Don't be careless,” she hissed to herself. She smoothed out the cloak and pulled the disheveled stitches out. She sat quietly, purposefully, and began to sew again. She focused intently on the sharp needle pulling through the thick fabric, the rough punctures smoothing themselves as the lustrous thread glided through. The seam, once ragged and torn, was healed. Liquidlight tied off the thread and lifted the cloak up. A smile of satisfaction found her face as she carefully folded the garment and placed it back into her satchel. A flick of her fingers darkened the cabin, and she closed the door silently. With her bag over he shoulder, she mounted her strider and set off to return to her friends.
