re: The Calm Before

The Cataclysm was over.

In the Barrens of Kalimdor, the rent and tortured land groaned its last, the tremors that had shaken the world since Deathwing’s emergence finally subsided into stillness. The wrathful elemental spawn of stone and flame sank down into dust and ash, their tormented consciousness dissolved back into the primal substance from whence they had come, or been drawn against their will by the adherents of the Twilight cult, finding peace at last in the embrace of their elemental essence.

In the Twilight highlands, the lesions torn into the substance of reality by the malice of the cultists still suppurated, spilling corrosive power into the substance of Azeroth -- but now, rather than gouts pouring from a fresh wound, that spill was controlled by the skilled hands of the Earthen Ring. Their invocation of the world’s primal forces acted now to cleanse those wounds, lancing the dark core of the unnatural infection twisting the world, that those wounds might heal clean in the fullness of time.

On Mount Hyjal, the fires that had reduced forests older than the whole of the world’s history to ash still smoldered -- but those blazes were few and far between. The defeat and destruction of Ragnaros had driven his minions back into the Firelands, and broken the link binding the sacred mountain to that barren place of ashen death. The Cenarion Circle and their helpers gathered there in the shadow of the reborn Ancients to make whole what had been put wrong there, already the mountains stirring with new life, fresh green shoots pushing up through drifts of cinder, death giving way to rebirth.

In the Forbidding Sea, the Maelstrom still raged -- an unending hurricane of slashing winds and roaring seas, battering forever at the ruin-strewn remains of Zin-Azshari. Beneath it, though, the wound torn between Azeroth and the elemental planes no longer pulsed, sending tremors of instability through the fabric of reality, threatening to rend the world apart. By the hands of many, the World Pillar was restored.

Around the world, the Hour of Twilight passed...and a new day dawned.
